News releasesNew poem marks the bicentenary of the Battle of Trafalgar London, September 2005 - The Ballad of Horatio Nelson is a poem specially written to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar and the death of Nelson, being commemorated across the UK this year. "I saw that there were to be celebrations to mark the bicentenary and realised that I knew very little about Nelson and the battle, including not knowing where Trafalgar is", said the poem's author and Chartered Shipbroker, Peter Brodie, better known perhaps as a writer of textbooks on Shipping. "I felt that a poem might fill in some blanks for people, and even help set the scene for children learning about the subject for the first time". Brodie hopes the poem will also draw attention to a campaign he is running which aims to raise awareness and funds for disabled sailing. The campaign is fittingly centred around a song about going sailing which Brodie has written and recorded, called 'Summer Breeze'. He has set up a website at www.peterbrodie.com where the poem and details of the campaign can be seen. As part of the bicentenary celebrations, a flotilla of boats will sail up the Thames on Friday 16 September in a re-creation of the waterborne funeral procession of Lord Nelson. The Thames Nelson Flotilla will follow the route from Greenwich to Westminster taken by `the original procession on 8 January 1806. ### For editors: This news release can be downloaded here as a Word document (20kb) and the text of the poem are to be found on the dedicated page. Details of the flotilla can be found at thamesnelsonflotilla.org London, UK, 1 January 2005 CAMPAIGN FOR DISABLED SAILING EXTENDED INTO 2005 A campaign to help raise awareness and funds for disabled sailing, originally set to end on 31 December 2004, is to be extended into 2005, says organiser Peter Brodie. This is to give more time for the campaign to be publicised around the world. The campaign centres on a CD released by UK singer/songwriter Peter Brodie. The CD has 10 tracks including 'Summer Breeze', a ballad about looking forward to going sailing. For every copy sold, Brodie is donating one US Dollar to the International Foundation for Disabled Sailing (IFDS), the body responsible for disabled sailing around the world, including sailing for people with physical disabilities, blindness, deafness and learning difficulties, and covering all aspects of sailing including recreation, training and racing. The money will go towards ongoing international projects, such as developing and updating resources to provide accessible venues for disabled sailors worldwide. 'Summer Breeze' can be heard at www.peterbrodie.com. END OF NEWS RELEASE FOR EDITORS The IFDS website is at www.sailing.org/disabled/.
