He hoped it would take him to the North Pole, or maybe the South Pole; he had heard about the Poles and felt that if he made such a discovery by himself, it would be difficult to beat by the other Sandwiches, the Biscuits or indeed anyone else! Chickie struggled on across the `ocean', getting colder and colder and more tired but feeling that he was doing something really exciting. After a while, he found himself next to a bird table. Could this be one of the Poles? Chickie became very excited at his discovery. He approached the Pole slowly and carefully. But as he got near to it, it turned out to be ... not a Pole ... but a sort of tree. It wasn't like any tree Chickie had seen before, but he was so disappointed that it wasn't a Pole that he hurried on immediately. A few minutes later, a large shape loomed up out of the darkness. It was a rotary washing line. The night was so black that Chickie couldn't tell what it was. At first, he thought that it might be another tree as it had what looked like a trunk sticking high up out of the ground. Home page         Previous page         Next page |
