The answer is at the end of the story
The Sandwiches were walking happily down the road. They were on their way to school, and this was their first day.
Chickie was leading the way and he was the first one to spot the school.
"There it is", he shouted.
"What do you suppose they do there?" asked Eggie.
"We'll soon find out", said Hammie.
They went in through the big doors and saw lots of children going into a classroom. The Sandwiches followed and sat down. Moments later, the teacher came in. Straight away, she started asking each of the children a question such as:
"What's 9 times 4?" and "Divide 28 by 7".
Hammie was the first Sandwich she came to. The teacher said: "Do you know your times tables?"
Hammie was confused. What did the teacher mean?
"Well," she said", I know about kitchen tables and dining tables. And I think there are such things as bedside tables. But I don't what 'times tables' are."
The children roared with laughter.
The teacher shook her head.
"No, no, that's not what I meant at all."
She turned to Cheesie.
If you had 16 biscuits and you gave 9 away, how many would you have left?"
Cheesie thought for a moment.
"You would have 7 left."
Everyone clapped. Then Cheesie added:
"Of course, after a while, you'd have 16 again."
"Why?" asked the teacher.
"Everyone knows," replied Cheesie, "that Biscuits get homesick. They would all come home as soon as they could!"
Everyone laughed. Cheesie did not know why.
Chickie whispered to Eggie.
"Let's hide before we get asked a question. That way, no-one will laugh at us."
They hid under the desk. But the teacher saw them and called to them to come out. They came out from under the desk, red-faced. All the children laughed and laughed.
The teacher said:
"You'll have to stay after school and answer extra questions."
Eggie thought for a moment. He turned to Chickie.
"Is that what they mean by learning your lesson?"
