Brodie lived in Canada in the 1960s and among his compositions is a song entitled 'The Afternoons Are Cold Round Georgian Bay', a song about hitchhiking along the Trans-Canada Highway which runs from coast to coast. It is one of only a handful of songs written about this romantically named road, and believed to be the only one written by a non Canadian. Have a listen ... The Afternoons Are Cold Round Georgian Bay

The afternoons are cold round Georgian Bay
Words and music by Peter Brodie 1971

Well I'm standing on the Trans-Canadian Highway
Beggin everyone to stop and give me a ride
I started out last week from Nova Scotia
And I've got to try and reach the other side

All I have are seven dollars in my pocket
And a never-ending pain inside my head
And if I can make Port Arthur by the time the sun goes down
I might find a friendly place to make my bed

My girl is waiting for me in Vancouver
And every minute passes like a day
I think that I'll be on this road for ever
And the afternoons are cold round Georgian Bay

I long to see the wheat fields of Alberta
And the Rocky Mountains pointing to the sky
But I'm still standing on the side of Highway 17
With my hand out while a friendless world goes by

Late last night I got to feeling hungry
And stopped off at a cheap roadside cafe
I asked if anyone was going wets along the road
But everyone was going the other way

If ever I should reach Vancouver Island
I'll find the warmth I need so much today
But as I stand and wait there's only one thing on my mind
That the afternoons are cold round Georgian Bay
